We often talk about celebrities’ style evolution but fail to acknowledge that most of them are only adhering to what’s “in” at a particular time. Of course, a few daring celebs might have served lewks that defy the trends of the time, but we’re not covering those rare occasions today. So if you’ve ever wondered what lehengas, sarees and blouse designs were popular at the beginning of this century – when stylists were largely unheard of – we dug the archives for some gorgeous Indian wear looks from the 2000s.1. Preity Zinta (2006) Image credit: Reuters Preity Zinta turned muse for Manish Malhotra and sashayed down the runway in an ivory lehenga set. Here’s proof that corsets with lehengas was not a novel idea and is only a reinterpretation of a trend loved and adored in the noughties. Interestingly, while the crochet trend is blooming, we haven’t seen much of it in Indian wear. 2. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan (2003) Image credit: Reuters As much as the starlets favoured the sexy blouses, the long choli was also a mainstay in fashion. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan was a jury member at the 56th International Film Festival in Cannes. 3. Priyanka Chopra Jonas (2009) Image credit: Reuters Other than shimmery eyes and glossy lips, attention-stealing, tacky sarees with fluorescent details were on the radar of top fashionistas. When it came to Indian wear, most celebs favoured Bollywood’s favorite designer, Manish Malhotra. 4. Kareena Kapoor Khan and Karisma Kapoor Image credit: reuters The Kapoor sisters were always ahead of their times. Back in 2003, Karisma ditched the traditional red in favour of a pink bridal lehenga. Note how pastels reigned supreme at this big-fat wedding of the early aughts. 5. Hema Malini, Juhi Chawla, Sridevi and Kareena Kapoor Khan (2005) Image credit: reuters Some things haven’t changed at all. Our love for understated sarees in net, georgette, silk or crepe with dainty sequins and strappy blouses, for instance, remains unchallenged. 6. Sushmita Sen (2005) Image credit: Reuters Our times are notorious for borrowing fashion from the decades gone by. Strappy blouses, bikini tops, halter necks were all the rage back then and continue to be so. 7. Shilpa Shetty Kundra (2007) Image credit: Reuters If styled right, the jeans and kurta aesthetic is not that bad, afterall. The DU girl knows best how to give it a spin – add those wide-legged jeans, slip into Kolhapuris and complete the look with oxidised silver jewellery. Now coming to Shilpa’s look, it’s still relevant if you lose those chain-like waist belts. PS: This was the same year the kurta + jeans look piqued thanks to Kareena Kapoor Khan’s Jab We Met looks.Lead image credit: Reuters
